Manvantara, Mukta and Garva definitely had all the above qualities and hence drew viewers in hordes, not just to their idiot boxes but also to the many 'samvada' programs that T.N.Seetharam hosted. (Garva was directed by Prakash Belawadi; I had missed out most of the initial episodes of Garva.
The major part of the serial was shot at journalist Vaddarse Raghurama Shetty’s house in Kundapura. While GS Bhaskar had handled cinematography, BR Chaaya had crooned the renowned theme song ’Denna na denna na’, which was a mixture of Kannada and Tulu words. Compared to 2016 I seemed to be getting a bit more traction over catching up on movies. But I lost that somewhat midway through the year. For all you know, there might not be this post next year.
But here goes. Thithi (2015)Everyone has heard of this caper about an old man who ditches his family at the time of his much older 100 years old father, aptly called, Century Gowda’s death. As soon as I finished I was wondering what the hype was all about. It took me days and even months to appreciate the subtle humour and simplicity of the movie. Don’t miss this. Arrival (2016)I read an describing the book “Story of your life and others” by Ted Chiang.
And the movie that was based on the titular story of that book. Both have enough differences in their narratives to be different stories by themselves, but stay true to the core.
There is a lot on linguistics and learning here to keep you interested. The key concepts are about languages and linear/non-linear time, and how they are related. Watch the movie! And also read the book! The other stories in the book are also really good.
Noted – #5 and #5 in movie list, as you might know I had covered all Ghibli movies 8-9 years back and recently revisited all of them again with wife and finished of all of Miyazaki and Takahata movies again. There are very few left to catch up and good to stumble upon two more to watch ?I do need to catch up on Hateful Eight and someone else also recommended Strike series but will go by your suggestion of book first. That almost always works for every adaptationI have mostly watched Malayalam movies in 2017 except for 4-5 Ghibli rewatches and a few hollywood movies. One movie that really impressed me was ‘Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum’ ( Malayalam). Your Name, I am glad it didn’t end like the stories of 5cm per second. Though 5cm per second is visually so beautiful I haven’t gotten myself to watch it again, as it leaves you in such a troubling place in your heart.
I liked the trajectory of Your Name.Like all Ghibli movies, ‘when marnie was there’ left me with the usual Ghibli vibe, A soulful, content and warm feeling. One where I know, today is going to be a good day!
I can’t wait for more movies from the studio.Nice seeing your posts here and to know you are a Japanese anime fan.
